As you probably already know I live in Ghent, often claimed to be the best kept secret of Europe. I fell in love with this city since I first came here to study at Ghent’s University. Every single sight-seer can tell you exploring the streets is like walking through a picturesque historical painting. But that’s not it. Ghent offers such a wide variety of activities that you will never get bored once you visit this vibrant city. On top of that, there are tons of trendy new hotspots which make Ghent an amazing place for design lovers, fashionistas and foodies.
When you’re visiting Ghent for the weekend, it’s hard to decide where you should go and especially where you should eat. Since I’m a foodie by nature, I wanted to share some of my favorite restaurants at the moment.
Janines
Vlaanderenstraat 82, 9000 Gent
Janines is this brand new foodie place in the heart of Ghent where you can go for lunch, sweets and diner in a trendy cozy interior. The restaurant is located nearby Gent Zuid, the southern part of the city. The menu shows a variety of fresh tapas, heavenly pastas, burgers and nice desserts. Besides good and affordable wines they also make the best cocktails. Definitely worth trying.
Aperto Chiuso
Sleepstraat 82, 9000 Gent
This place definitely is my favorite authentic Italian restaurant in town. Locals love this little hotspot, so you really have to book a table. There is a large choice of home made Italian specialties, all prepared in the open kitchen. The food is amazing, the portions are generous. Do not forget to drink a limoncello to conclude your visit.

Oak
Hoogstraat 167, 9000 Gent
This trendy refined restaurant downtown Ghent is the perfect spot for special occasions. A few years ago Marcelo Ballardin, a young Italian-Brazilian chef, set up his own restaurant in town. Ballardin’s cooking style combines innovative ideas with the freshest ingredients. The relaxed modern interior makes the perfect sitting for this style of contemporary cooking. Yummy!
Bodo
Burgstraat 2, 9000 Gent
If you’re looking for simple and tasteful food in a contemporary setting, Bodo is the place to be. The restaurant is located in a typical historical building in the centre of Ghent. Bodo has a basic Scandinavian interior that mirrors the cuisine. The menu offers traditional dishes prepared with a definite focus on taste. The perfect place for both lunch and dinner.
Otomat
Kleine Vismarkt 3, 9000 Gent
Smile, there’s pizza! We all know and love the concept of Eat Love Pizza, but there’s a new pizza hotspot in town. Otomat Antwerp now has a little sister in Ghent. Their pizza dough is made with Duvel beer and every flavor has a special Belgian twist. This restaurant is ideal for diner with a group of friends, sharing some delicious pizzas and enjoying a typical Belgian beer. The industrial interior makes you feel like you’re in London or New York. Check it out!
Super tof om te lezen en heb wat inspiratie op gedaan! Ga zo verder 😊
